Ground Investigation

A ground investigation (or site investigation) may be required for several reasons.

A ground investigation, incorporating appropriate laboratory testing, can give information for a geotechnical assessment (e.g. to provide engineers with information to design foundations), for ground contamination risk assessments (e.g. for discharge of planning conditions) or to support water supply pipe risk assessments. Some investigations can combine a number of requirements.

We recognise the importance of planning any intrusive works carefully to ensure that the investigation is cost effective and appropriate to meet your needs, whatever they are.

If you aren't sure what sort of ground investigation you need at your site or how best it can be delivered, please give us a call and speak to one of our team. We would be happy to discuss what options are available to you.

Investigation techniques available include:

  • Light cable percussion (shell and auger) boring
  • Rotary core drilling
  • Dynamic sampler boring (windowless sampling)
  • Continuous dynamic probing
  • Trial pitting (by hand or mechanical excavator)
  • Installation and monitoring of ground gas and groundwater monitoring standpipes

Our field staff can also conduct in situ tests like plate bearing tests, soakage tests, and standard penetration tests. If you need guidance on the type of ground investigation required for your site, feel free to contact us.

We record all test and exploratory hole locations on plans provided to us or if these are not available we can arrange for a topographical survey of your site.

Our ground investigation works are conducted in accordance with our Health and Safety policy and procedures and supported where necessary by services supplied by partner companies such as UXO engineering supervision, utility surveys and geophysical surveys.
